Colored Pieces
Mixed media artwork by Allan Leon
How it began...
Without any exposure or connection to the art community whatsoever, around 10 years ago I accidentally stumbled upon the thought idea of what it might look like to create artwork out of common adhesive vinyl. The kind typically used for making signs, graphic decals and logos and the like. After two years of self-taught trial and error, I eventually got to the point where I was able to assemble a limited number of pieces/shapes in to a composition with modest artistic value. Fast forward to today where my skill level has improved significantly to the point where I am able to assemble these pieces to create complex compositions of varying style and subject matter, typically involving hundreds of pieces (a thousand pieces in some cases) all without the use of any other media like paint or ink. I cut the colorful rolls of vinyl into various shapes then place each sticky piece on to a solid backing material one pieces at a time by hand to create a variety of artwork. For example, all the artwork displayed on this website were made this way without the use of paint. I considered this method “mixed media” in that I often combine different types of vinyls – glossy, mat, metallics – to create a truly unique textured look. A look and feel that cannot be achieved with ordinary paint media. This is my exclusive technique which to my knowledge no one has attempted to duplicate.
